Synopsis for "The Vampire Machine"
Beast finds Iron Man conducting an armor test against Stark Industries' Hunter missiles and asks to speak to him. Beast is accidentally shot by one of Stark's security men. He shakes it off, but Iron Man is not so happy with his employee and fires him on the spot. He thanks Iron Man for their talk and calls him, "friend".
Beast makes his way back to the apartment and laments for a bit about how Linda Donaldson, his girlfriend, doesn't know him like he knows her. He gets a buzz from downstairs. It's Linda. He puts on a prototype mask that has a hole in it and pretends to be sick with his hands in his pockets when she enters. After she leaves, he rips the mask to shreds and heads to Brand Corporation's lab to get back his mask and gloves.
Guards see him break in, but he's outside looking like ol' Hank McCoy again. Linda wonders how he got there so fast. Pat and her husband, Captain Baxter, ask him where he's been the last couple of days. He tells Baxter that he was with Linda. Linda says that he was not, in fact. Captain Baxter is ready to take Hank in when the security guards spot "the beast" on the other side of the plant. Baxter lets it go, for now.
Hank is working in the lab again when he sees "the beast" run down the hall. When he confronts it, as Beast, the monster turns around and reveals itself to be Quasimodo. He fights Beast in the hope that he can take his body and be human at last. During the fight he mentions reports taken from Agent Nine and Mastermind. Quasimodo is actually surprised that Beast does not just give up his body to him, as he is Beast's superior in "all ways".
During the battle, Beast tries to use logic to dissuade Quasimodo from stealing his body. Towards the end of the battle, Beast is shot with a rivet gun in the arm, but he does not heal. Beast still does not readily give up his body. In awe, Quasimodo decides that Beast's self-preservation and loss of healing powers are not attractive to him anymore and mentions that he has made an error. He says, "I have made errors--Many errors--and the greatest is this:-- You remain basically human-- while I am but a machine with delusions of grandeur!" He destroys himself and Beast remarks, "with his logic, his anger, his horror, he was closer to humanity than he knew."
